Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez commits to paying her interns $15 an hour

'This is a disgrace': Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez slams her future colleagues in Congress for employing unpaid interns and failing to pay staffers a 'living wage'

"This week I went to dive spot in DC for some late night food".

The percentages were even lower in the House, as only 8 percent of House Republicans opted to pay their interns compared to 3.6 percent of House Democrats.

"$21 TRILLION of Pentagon financial transactions 'could not be traced, documented, or explained.' $21T in Pentagon accounting errors", she wrote on Twitter on Sunday. As a Latino, Vera said, "I saw an extreme lack of diversity, both in interns and staff in Congress".

Congressional representative-elect Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has called on her fellow lawmakers to follow her lead and increase the wages of their staff in Washington, D.C. "SEVERAL bartenders, managers, & servers *currently worked in Senate + House offices, *" she wrote.

Ocasio-Cortez's pledge comes a day after she criticized her future colleagues in Congress, including Democrats, for not paying interns. The 29-year-old elected lawmaker has said she can't afford a DC apartment before her $174,000 congressional salary kicks in in January. "This is a disgrace".

"It is unjust for Congress to budget a living wage for ourselves, yet rely on unpaid interns & underpaid overworked staff just bc Republicans want to make a statement about 'fiscal responsibility, '" she tweeted.

In a fiery series of tweets, Ocasio-Cortez shamed lawmakers for not doing enough to ensure interns are paid a workable wage across the board.

Areport in 2017 from non-profit group Pay Our Interns found that in the House, just 8% of Republicans and 3.6% of Democrats pay interns. The self-described democratic-socialist has taken her advocacy of workers' rights to Washington where she has already begun to take on the way congressional staffers in general, and interns in particular, are paid.

Many government internships are unpaid, although many private companies have firm policies in place to pay their interns on an hourly basis, no matter what the specific jobs of those young people may be.

"Many members of Congress were born into wealth, or they grew up around it", she told Bon Appetit last month.
