Yelich wins first career NL MVP

Oct 19 2018 Milwaukee WI USA Milwaukee Brewers right fielder Christian Yelich before game six of the 2018 NLCS playoff baseball

He hit a major league-leading.346 with 32 homers, 80 RBIs and 30 stolen bases as the leadoff hitter for the World Series-champion Red Sox. He won a Gold Glove in right field, led the majors in slugging percentage and the AL in extra-base hits, tied for the major league lead with 129 runs scored and outpointed the Los Angeles Angels' Mike Trout and Cleveland Indians' Jose Ramirez to capture MVP honors.

An accolade-filled 2018, could the Associated Press (AP) Male Athlete of the Year be the next honor Betts claims? "We have a bunch of great personalities, great athletes in this game, and it's definitely something that's getting younger, that's growing and something I take pride knowing I can make a difference in a kid's life". The MVP voting yielded different results though as Yelich amassed 29 first-place votes, a near unanimous selection. Teammate J.D. Martinez finished fourth with 198 points and received one of the two first-place votes that didn't go to Betts (Trout got the other).

Christian Yelich's outstanding debut season with the Milwaukee Brewers has ended with the outfield slugger winning the National League MVP award.

"Obviously I really wanted to win then (in 2016) being in that spot because you never know if you're going to make it back", Betts said.

He became the first Red Sox player to win the batting title since Bill Mueller in 2003, and his 1.078 OPS ranks 14th in team history, trailing nine seasons from Ted Williams, two from Jimmie Foxx, and one each from Babe Ruth and Manny Ramirez.

The 26-year-old belted 36 home runs and drove in 110 runs, totals that put him in contention for the Triple Crown.

Rockies third baseman Nolan Arenado finished third and Braves first baseman Freddie Freeman was fourth. Unlike some baseball players, he doesn't eschew off-the-field limelight. He played his best against the team the Red Sox had to beat for the division title. He has earned about $13.5 million in salary during his career.

Though Betts will not be a free agent until 2021, he was awarded a $10.5 million salary in arbitration for the 2018 season and will see that number climb much higher in 2019.
