Women's Rugby World Cup 2021 to be held in Aotearoa

The New Zealand squad celebrates winning the Rugby World Cup in 2015 but many familiar faces like Richie Mc Caw and Dan Carter are gone

"New Zealand is one of the biggest rugby-loving nations in the world, so as much as it is a loss for us it is a gain for the game as a whole".

New Zealand Rugby (NZR) has announced that the Rugby Championship test will take place at Westpac Stadium on July 27, while the All Blacks and Black Ferns will again feature in a trans-Tasman double-header at Eden Park on August 17.

Auckland and Whangarei have been confirmed as the host cities, and this will be the first time that the WRWC has been played in the Southern Hemisphere.

Rugby Australia chief executive Raelene Castle said her organisation would use lessons from their failed women's bid to strategise a more compelling bid for 2027.

The Women's Rugby World Cup (WRWC) is the premier global rugby competition for women.

Wellington is to host the mouth-watering Rugby World Cup 2019 preview between the All Blacks and South Africa.

There are also significant impacts through worldwide exposure and broadcast opportunities, including in some of Auckland's priority markets of Australia, United States, Japan and China.

Australia fell just five votes short of the 22 required to win the hosting rights for the 2021 tournament.

"We are looking forward to providing a world-class stage for our champion Black Ferns to defend the World Cup in front of their fans".

The women's tournament in 2021 will be the first held in the southern hemisphere after being held in Wales (1991), Scotland (1994), the Netherlands (1998), Spain (2002), Canada (2006), England (2010), France (2014) and Ireland (2017).

"This Government is committed to more women and girls getting involved in sport, so we are enthusiastic supporters of bringing this elite women's tournament to New Zealand and inspiring a new generation of women and girls to get involved in rugby".

"We made an early decision that the bid would not be successful if we tried to play it across the country".

Mayor Phil Goff says it is great news that Auckland will be jointly hosting this exciting event.

"The Sydney Sevens has only been going for two years and we're still seeing huge growth in numbers in Australia".

"I also want to acknowledge the passionate support we received from Newcastle and the Hunter Valley Rugby communities behind our bid".

"I'm hugely excited the event will be held here", she said.
