Trump lists Republicans who didn't want his "embrace", lost in midterm elections

Fox News calls House

Reacting to Tuesday's election, in which Democrats won control of the House and Republicans added to their Senate majority, President Trump praised House Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi while warning Democrats against investigating his administration.

That chamber is the Alaska House, which had been controlled by the Democrats in concert with a group of renegade Republicans. Victories in contested races across Florida, New York, Virginia, Pennsylvania and Minnesota gave them cause for optimism.

But the Democrats' edge is narrow. "That is possible", he told a news conference at the White House. Twenty-five percent described health care and immigration as the most important issues in the election. Almost two-thirds said Trump was a reason for their vote.

The Democrats should be careful not to fall in Donald Trump's "trap", warns a political expert.

Mr Trump will now feel that his base has endorsed his actions over the past two years, our correspondent says.

"If the Democrats think they are going to waste Taxpayer Money investigating us at the House level, then we will likewise be forced to consider investigating them for all of the leaks of Classified Information, and much else, at the Senate level". Democrats are also interested in Trump's tax returns, which he has declined to make public. Republicans kept their Senate majority.

Over the last two years there was always this sense that while the president's thunderous championing of white nationalism and anti-immigrant rhetoric and policies was hurting him in the heavily Mexican-American parts of the southwestern USA, it was the key to unlock the Rustbelt and Midwest - the part of the country seen as the one which gave him the presidency.

At the Capitol, in the stately Rayburn Room - named after the last speaker who returned to the office - Pelosi was asked if she was confident she would become speaker when the new Congress convenes in January. Heidi Heitkamp (D-N.D.), Joe Donnelly (D-Ind.), and Claire McCaskill (D-Mo.) did. And in Tennessee, Congresswoman Marsha Blackburn defeated former Gov. Phil Bredesen, a top Democratic recruit.

Republican leadership elections are set for next week.

Trump praised Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke, who has come under scrutiny for his use of a security detail, chartered flights and a real estate deal, but seemed to leave open the possibility of replacing him.

A debate about whether Trump's rhetoric encouraged extremists erupted in the campaign's final weeks after pipe bombs were mailed to his top political rivals allegedly by a Trump supporter who was arrested and charged, and 11 people were killed in a shooting at a Pittsburgh synagogue.

Overall, 6 in 10 voters said the country was headed in the wrong direction, but roughly that same number described the national economy as excellent or good.

Those tax cuts, designed to create jobs, have widely been viewed as President Trump's signature legislative achievement.

This, too, will be a shadow investigation to two litigations brought by members of Congress and others against the president personally that allege that Trump has violated the Emoluments Clause of the Constitution. Both Barack Obama's and Bill Clinton's numbers were 5 points higher, and both suffered major midterm losses of 63 and 54 House seats respectively. The Democratic field could include a red-state governor, a big city mayor or perhaps even a failed Senate candidate, after Beto O'Rourke's spirited challenge in Texas. They included New Jersey Sen. The Justice Department dropped the charges after his trial ended in an hung jury.

Several ambitious Democrats easily won re-election, including presidential prospects Bernie Sanders of Vermont, Elizabeth Warren of MA and Kirsten Gillibrand of NY.

Trump dissected the elections in a combative White House news conference that stretched to almost 90 minutes as he put a defiantly glossy sheen on the mixed midterm results and stressed his party's victories in the Senate. He and the first lady were to host an evening watch party for family and friends.

History was working against the president in both the House and the Senate.

Mr Trump entertains no such thoughts, instead calling Tuesday night's results "very close to complete victory".

Trump's Republican coalition is increasingly older, whiter, more male and less likely to have a college degree. The House Speaker is third in line to Presidency in the United States political hierarchy and considered one of the most powerful offices.

At a White House news conference, Trump noted the contenders who ran with him and won, including Illinois GOP Reps.

But the rosiest expectations of some Democrats - that they could create a "blue wave" even when playing defense on the Senate map - proved unfounded. Democratic Senate incumbents were up for re-election, for example, in North Dakota, Indiana, and Missouri - states Trump carried by nearly 25 percentage points on average two years ago.

In midterm elections, a president's party loses a handful of seats.

Record diversity on the ballot may have helped drive turnout.

Three states could elect their first African-American governors, while several others were running LGBT candidates and Muslims.

All 435 seats in the US House of Representatives, 35 US Senate seats and 36 governorships are up for grabs in elections focused on dozens of competitive races from coast to coast that opinion polls show could go either way.
