This is all that's left of fire-ravaged California town

Experts look ways to curb deaths as fires get more severe

The deadliest wildfires in California's history have killed at least 65 people and more than 600 are still missing as authorities continue to search for victims.

The missing persons' list has doubled since earlier on Thursday.

The Camp Fire, which broke out a week ago in the drought-affected Sierra Foothills 280 kilometres north of San Francisco, has left at least 63 people dead.

Numerous victims and the hundreds missing in the Camp Fire were elderly people who lived in the Butte County town of Paradise, in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada mountains. At an evening news briefing he said the remains of seven more victims had been located since Wednesday.

Volunteers say they want people to go to shelters, so clothing, food and toilets will be removed by Sunday.

Almost 9,000 homes and most of the Paradise was incinerated hours after the blaze erupted, according to the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection.

The sheriff has asked relatives of the missing to submit DNA samples to help identify the dead. By Thursday, Camp Fire, which has destroyed about 9,700 homes and scorched 141,000 acres in Northern California, was 40 per cent contained.

A number of celebrities have lost their homes in Malibu as a result of the Woolsey inferno, including Pierce Brosnan, Miley Cyrus, Neil Young, Robin Thicke, Shannen Doherty and Gerard Butler.

"This is so devastating that I don't really have the words to describe it", Brown told a press conference.

The initial focus on the start point to the camp fire has been on high voltage PG&E power lines near the Feather River Dam.
