Spending too much time with your mobile may up risk of cancer

The National Toxicology Program study examined the effects of a radio frequency associated with 1990s-era cellphone technology which fell out of routine use years ago

The NTP found "clear evidence" that high levels of cell phone radiation can cause cancers of the heart, brain and adrenal glands in male rats.

The link between exposure and cancer was less clear in female rats and in male and female mice, according to the November 1 report from the National Toxicology Program (NTP) at the U.S. National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS).

However, those tempted to toss away today's most important tool of communications may want to consider that the study's researchers did specify the levels of radiation the rats were subjected to were not comparable to those humans are exposed to.

"Animal studies like this one contribute to our discussions on this topic, but we must remember the study was not created to test the safety of cell phone use in humans, so we can not draw conclusions about the risks of cell phone use from it". Bucher added that the mice were also exposed to radiation across their whole bodies, which is not what happens in people, who instead receive only local exposure to the specific area where they hold the phone.

For the study, the team housed the animals in chambers specifically designed for the study. It's a debate that has raged for many years around the world. Early detection saves life. The animals were exposed to a total of 9 hours of radiation per day, in 10-minutes sessions.

RFR levels ranged from 1.5 to 6 watts per kilogramme in rats, and 2.5 to 10 watts per kilogramme in mice.

"We believe that the link between radio frequency radiation and tumors in male rats is real, and the external experts agreed", said Bucher.

Plus, FDA pointed out confusing findings from the rodent study - such as that the radiated rats lived longer than comparison rats that weren't exposed to the rays.

Strangely, however, the studies found that exposure in male rats actually lengthened their lifespan, possibly linked with a decrease in chronic kidney problems found in older rats.

The rats were exposed to radiation at a frequency of 900 megahertz, the frequency used in the second generation of mobile phones that prevailed in the 90s when the study was first conceived. And the highest radiation level used in the study was four times higher than the maximum level allowed in people.

"5G is an emerging technology that hasn't really been defined yet".

"The wireless radiation from 5G will be 30 times greater than previous 4G LTE systems based on our recent study of 28Ghz planned to be used by new 5G wireless systems-this radiation will be most absorbed by the skin and eyes".

The NTP did say it is taking steps to evaluate newer telecommunications technologies in the coming weeks or months.

During a telephone news briefing, Bucher, the senior scientist at the toxicology agency, said evidence of DNA damage from the current study needed further examination. In addition, the studies will try to identify biomarkers that may indicate early effects of radio-frequency radiation exposure in rodents, such as changes in heart rate or molecular changes that might be predictive of cancer.

The Food and Drug Administration said it concurs that the research doesn't indicate people have any risk of cancer from using cellphones.

The federal government's National Toxicology Program released its final report Thursday on whether cellphones cause cancer. NIH is the primary federal agency conducting and supporting basic, clinical, and translational medical research, and is investigating the causes, treatments, and cures for both common and rare diseases.
