See ya, CC: 2019 to be last season in majors

CC Sabathia announced Wednesday that 2019 will be his final year in the Major League Baseball.

Sabathia signed a $161 million, seven-year contract with the Yankees before the 2009 season and led NY to its first World Series title since 2000, then used the leverage of an opt-out provision after the 2011 season to get a new deal that added a $25 million salary for 2016 with a $25 million team option for 2017. He previously played for the Cleveland Indians and Milwaukee Brewers. He struck out 140 and walked 51 in 153 innings pitched.

"He finished batting in the middle of our lineup in the post-season, so I don't see why three weeks since that time would change our evaluation process", Cashman said. A trade could be involved and there are certainly some free agents that fit as well. Trust me. I think he's a heck of a pitcher.

"I think we'll just gravitate to anything that will make sense", Cashman said Monday at the start of the 2018 General Manager Meetings, via "I'll play for whoever needs me".

Cashman has said starting pitching would be a Yankees priority this off-season, and last week, a team source told the Daily News the team would strongly pursue Patrick Corbin, a 29-year-old free agent righty who went 11-7 with a 3.15 ERA and 246 strikeouts in 200 innings for the Arizona Diamondbacks last season.

Luis Severino and Masahiro Tanaka are the Yankees' two returning starters that are under contract for 2019.

Sonny Gray is under contract and capable of starting, but he isn't in the Yankees' plans. The Yankees are expected to look for more pitching options in the offseason. Sabathia won the World Series with NY in 2009.
