Microsoft Acquires 'Fallout: New Vegas' Developer Obsidian Entertainment

Xbox Acquires Wasteland, Bard's Tale Studio InXile Entertainment

Microsoft has just announced that it has acquired both Obsidian Entertainment and inXile Entertainment.

Obsidian Entertainment gave us some incredible RPG experience such as Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic 2, Pillars of Eternity, and Fallout: New Vegas.

Founded in 2002 by Interplay founder Brian Fargo, inXile has studios in Newport Beach, Calif. and New Orleans.

Microsoft also discussed the intent to acquire Obsidian Entertainment, emphasizing the desire to preserve the studio's culture and to maximize their potential. Game development takes time, so we haven't yet even begun to see the fruits of those partnerships, but to ensure Microsoft couldn't be accused of letting things sit idly in the meantime, it made a decision to pick up two more: Obsidian and inXile. "Of course, we're gonna continue doing role-playing games." said inXile CEO Brian Fargo in a video statement shortly after the announcement.

Obsidian Entertainment specialises in RPGs, with its current RPG being Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire. Well, they're part of the Microsoft family today, as announced during the X018 stream. Obsidian made a name for itself with Knights of the Old Republic II: The Sith Lords.

Obsidian had previously mentioned that they weren't ready for Fallout: New Vegas to be their last game in the Fallout-verse.

InXile head Brian Fargo has enjoyed an illustrious career producing quality RPGs that put choice and outcome at the forefront.

The acquisitions plug a bit of a gap in Microsoft's core lineup, which has lacked strong RPG chops for many years.
