Marsha Blackburn Wins Hotly Contested Tennessee Senate Race

Blackburn, who will become the first female US senator in Tennessee history after projections showed she will defeat Democratic former Gov. Phil Bredesen, was scorned by Swift last month when the pop star announced she would be supporting Bredesen.

Blackburn focused her campaign message on supporting President Donald Trump's agenda in an effort to appeal to the state's dominant Republican constituency. It's expected to be a close race between Blackburn and Democratic Senate hopeful Phil Bredesen who previously was governor for the state.

Blackburn was elected to Tennessee's 7th Congressional District in 2002.

Bredesen had been viewed as one of the Democrats' best hopes in the party's quest to regain majority control of the Senate. That race gained national attention after pop star Taylor Swift endorsed Bredesen, a relative moderate who had won two statewide elections.

'I always have and always will cast my vote based on which candidate will protect and fight for the human rights I believe we all deserve in this country.

Those qualities weren't enough, however, to win over a state that President Trump won in 2016 by 26 points.

"Unfortunately for Phil Bredesen, he's not going to be able to just shake it off. Congratulations, Senator-elect Blackburn!" The September fight to confirm Kavanaugh significantly boosted Blackburn, who took her first lead in the RealClearPolitics polling average in early October. Corker briefly heard out pleas from some peers last winter that he reconsider retirement, prompting a Blackburn spokeswoman to say anyone who thinks she can't win the general election is a "plain sexist pig".

"Marsha Blackburn ran an outstanding campaign from start to finish".

"Her voting record in Congress appalls and terrifies me".
