Manchester United's Paul Pogba and Anthony Martial withdraw

The attacker has been called up for the first time in a year

Paul Pogba and Anthony Martial have withdrawn from the France squad for the matches against Netherlands and Uruguay because of injury, the French Football Federation said on Monday.

However, within a couple of hours, the 27-year-old has suffered the same fate, having been told by Les Bleus' head doctor, Franck Le Gall, as well as members of the Arsenal medical team, that he is not fit enough to accept the invitation.

Arsenal striker Alexandre Lacazette has been forced to withdraw from the France national squad on the same day that he was handed a late call-up.

Pogba (thigh) missed Manchester United's 3-1 loss to City on Sunday, during which team-mate Martial (hip) and Mendy (knee) picked up injuries.

Alassane Plea, who has scored eight goals in the Bundesliga for Borussia Monchengladbach this season, has been called up instead. He won the last of his 16 France caps a year ago and missed out on Didier Deschamps' victorious World Cup squad.

It was Lacazette's first call-up for nearly a year as he hasn't featured for his country since scoring a brace against Germany in November 2017 and he narrowly missed out on a place in their World Cup squad.

The injury will be frustrating for Martial, who fought his way back into the national squad after scoring six goals in his last five league appearances for United.

This positive form appears to have earned him global recognition, but he will be unavailable for France as they prepare to face Netherlands and Uruguay.
