Investigators on Monday said the brand new Boeing 737 MAX 8 plane had a malfunctioning airspeed indicator on its last four flights including its fatal October 29 flight, based on an analysis of its flight data recorder.
According to people familiar with the matter, in the wake of the Lion Aircrash in Indonesia - where 189 people were killed - the plane maker is sending a bulletin that warns incorrect readings from a flight-monitoring system can result in the jets abruptly diving.
"We are formulating, with NTSB and Boeing, detailed inspections regarding the airspeed indicator", according to Soerjanto Tjahjono, head of the committee.
When contacted by FOX Business, Boeing declined to comment on the report.
Problems with the plane's last flight before the crash, from Denpasar on Bali to Jakarta, were widely reported.
Alon Soetanto told TVOne the plane dropped suddenly several times in the first few minutes of its flight. The spokesman said the instruments were examined by a maintenance crew between the penultimate and final flights.
Rescuers use a crane to retrieve part of the landing gears of the crashed Lion Air jet from the sea floor in the waters of Tanjung Karawang, Indonesia, Sunday, Nov. 4, 2018.
Lion Air Flight 610 crashed into the Java Sea with both engines running, meaning the airliner didn't explode in mid-air as previously thought, investigators said Monday.
Lion Air president director Edward Sirait said the carrier hadn't yet received any bulletins from Boeing. "But we can't find the CVR yet", Muhammad Syaugi said.
Mr Tjahjono has said 69 hours of recorded data from 19 flights, including the one that crashed, had been downloaded successfully from a partly damaged flight data recorder recovered on Thursday.
Now, based on the flight data recorder, investigators were able to identify two earlier flights that experienced the same problem - in every case tied to the airspeed indicator.
Data from the black box of Lion Air Flight 610 has confirmed problems with the plane's airspeed indicator. Searchers are still trying to locate the cockpit voice recorder on the flight. One of the more than 100 divers working at the crash site has died, CNN reported.
Families of victims of Lion Air flight JT610 attend a meeting with authorities and Lion Air management on Monday in Jakarta, Indonesia.
Authorities have yet to recover the jet's cockpit voice recorder from the sea floor, just northeast of Jakarta, where the plane crashed 13 minutes after taking off from the Indonesian capital.
