Kyrie Irving, Celtics rally from 22 down to top Suns in OT

Celtics Brad Stevens

It completed Boston's rally from 22 points down against Phoenix to push the contest into overtime, and the Celtics surged ahead to win 116-109. He averaged 11.3 points and started 19 games in the playoffs for Boston last season.

And then, the Celtics everyone was expecting before the season showed up, led once again by Kyrie Irving. Sure, they were facing the Suns, a team destined to finish in the upper echelon of next year's draft lottery but after Boston dug itself into a 15-point hole heading into the final frame, it was a daunting task for an offense that was completely out of sync.

Warren, starting for the first time since October 31, scored 14 first-quarter points as the Suns took advantage of Boston's shooting woes.

"I told Igor we didn't deserve to win the game, but it was a great individual performance by Kyrie, certainly", Celtics coach Brad Stevens said.

Boston got the lead down to 14 in the second, but a 3 from Booker gave the Suns a 48-26 advantage with 4:31 left in the half.

The Celtics shot a meager 21.7 percent from the field in the half - 10-for-46 - and committed 10 turnovers. The other four starters - Brown, Gordon Hayward, Al Horford and Tatum - missed all 15 of their shots. The Suns have been the most aggressive in that regard, having started pursuing him even before firing general manager Ryan McDonough on October 8.

Stevens called Ayton a "special talent" when asked about the rookie before the game. "'You saw it on full display in the fourth quarter and overtime".

At that point, it was time to pile onto a Celtics team that has been a fairly significant disappointment despite entering the game above.500 at 6-4.

Suns: At the New Orleans Pelicans on Saturday.
