International Olympic Committee pressures Spain over Kosovo athletes

Spain’s position on Kosovo could hurt its chances to host major sports events

"This will ensure that the athletes of Kosovo can participate under the same conditions as all the other athletes from the 206 National Olympic Committees recognized by the IOC".

Despite the dispute over the flag, Hasani said he saw Kosovo's participation in the event as a success, with the women's team finishing in seventh place in the competition.

A professional boxer from Kosovo has been denied entry to India to compete in the women's world championships because the foreign ministry does not recognise her country, an official said Tuesday.

While the BFI continued to insist that it was trying to work out a solution, pointing out that Donjeta also held an Albanian passport that might help her come to India, government officials refuted the claim.

"The Spanish government will provide sporting delegations from Kosovo that compete in Spain with the appropriate visa and will allow them the use of their own national symbols, the anthem and flag, in accordance with the Olympic protocol", the COE said in a statement. As a host country, the most high profile run-ins with visa issues that we have had have been with our neighbours Pakistan- a strained political relationship often seeping into the two countrys' sports as well.

"This is not about boxing alone, it's a much larger issue", Singh said. "We are still talking to the Ministry of External Affairs".

"If #India Government doesn't allow my participation at #Women #World Championship #NewDelhi2018, because of Visa issue I will consider quitting my future in boxing", the Kosovo Olympic Committee (NOC Kosovo) tweeted quoting boxer from their country Donjeta Sadiku as saying.

"Since it is an global relations matter, we won't have the final say over this", said sports secretary Rahul Bhatnagar.

"Failing which the situation will be reported to all global sports organisations concerned for appropriate action which will call into question the hosting of future worldwide sports events in India until the issue is solved", he added. 2018 Summer Youth Olympic Games: Manu Bhaker Leads the List of Indian Athletes Participating in Buenos Aires Youth Olympics.

Kosovo's declaration of independence was backed by 113 member-countries of the United Nations but the subject still remains a matter of controversy for a few countries- Russian Federation among them.

"From our perspective, we want to follow the International Olympic Committee guidelines".

Kosovo is one of nine debutants at the world championship.

Kosovo, which declared its independence from Serbia in 2008, was recognized as a member of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) in 2014, receiving the right to participate in international sports events as an independent state.
