Here are the candidates who made history in the 2018 midterms

Rashida Tlaib of Michigan becomes one of first Muslim women in Congress

Ilhan Omar took home 78 percent of the vote in Minnesota's 5th Congressional District, becoming the first Somali-American, first refugee and first hijab-wearing Muslim woman elected to the U.S. House of Representatives.

A fighter who once heckled US President Donald Trump during a 2016 campaign stop in Detroit, she says she didn't run to make history as Muslim. "And that if you just believe, believe in the possibility of someone like me".

In 2016 the one-time refugee became the first Somali-American elected to a state legislature in the US when she won a seat in the Minnesota House from Minneapolis, which has a large Somali community.

A pair of districts in the Midwest will add Muslim women to the ranks of the US Congress for the first time, CNN has projected. "But really I am not going from a first to another first", Omar said in an interview with The Associated Press.

Tlaib's relatives in the West Bank village of Beit Ur Al-Fauqa greeted the news of her election with a mixture of pride and hope that she would be able to take on a USA administration widely seen as hostile to Muslims and the Palestinian cause. Omar is reportedly the first refugee elected to Congress.

Omar announced her bid for Congress shortly after Rep. Keith Ellison, D-Minn., vacated the seat to run for Minnesota Attorney General in June.

In her victory speech, Omar's first words were: "As-salam alaikum" - a standard Muslim greeting that means "peace be upon you" - and then "alhamdulillah", or "all praise to God". The first refugee ever elected to Congress.

She is expected to share the honour with Somali-American Ilhan Omar, who was leading the opinion polls in Minnesota.

Her campaign platform included pledges to secure a $15 (KSh 1,528) minimum wage, preventing cuts to welfare programmes, as well as stopping tax relief to large corporations. But the Republicans have tightened its hold on the Senate with 51 candidates so far winning seats.
