Gunman kills 12 in California bar packed with students

Shooting reported at California bar

Authorities haven't identified what motivated Long to open fire during college night at Borderline Bar & Grill in Thousand Oaks, around 40 miles (64 kilometres) from downtown Los Angeles.

Ventura County Sheriff Geoff Dean named the suspect as Ian Long, aged 28.

Witnesses said that some of those at the bar had survived the massacre in Las Vegas just over a year ago when a man shot 58 people dead at a country music festival.

The Marine Corps said Long earned several awards, including a Combat Action Ribbon and a Marine Corps Good Conduct Medal. "They would go fishing up in the Sierras [Nevada mountains] together".

Ron Helus and a passing highway patrolman were responding to several 911 calls late Wednesday night when they showed up at the Borderline Bar & Grill in Thousand Oaks, California.

Knapp said, "It took a couple of seconds for people to realize what was going on and once that happened it was just utter chaos".

"He said Helus was on the phone with his wife when he got the report of the shooting and he told her, "'Hey, I have to go. "I was concerned because I knew he had been in the military".

The sheriff said it was possible that Long had suffered from post-traumatic stress disorder. "I don't sit in a room with my back to the door". A mental health crisis team determined at that time that he should not be taken into custody, the AP reported.

"It was just semi-automatic, as many shots as he could pull, and then when it started to reload that's when we got people out of there and I didn't look back".

They found themselves in a terrifyingly familiar scene Wednesday night, when bullets began flying once again. "Thank you to Law Enforcement".

The names of the victims were not immediately made public and people gathered at a nearby teen center waiting to learn the fate of loved ones.

For hours after the attack and into the early morning hours of Thursday, Housley's family was desperately seeking information about her.

"We would go to Borderline together".

The incident in California came two weeks after a gunman killed 11 people and injured seven at the Tree of Life synagogue in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, while Shabbat morning services were being held.

Justin Meek, 23, had recently graduated from Thousand Oaks' California Lutheran University, school officials confirmed in a statement on Thursday.

Paul Delacourt, assistant director in charge of the Los Angeles FBI office, said it was too early to speculate on the shooter's motives but that he appeared to have acted alone. "You're always overanalyzing people, trying to figure out if something were to go down, 'What would I do?'" First thing I said was, "please don't drink and drive". That exit leads to a patio where people smoke.

Curtis Kellogg, a friend who served with Long, said the last time he spoke with Long he was headed to Southern California.

Tayler Whitler, 19, said she was on the dance floor when she saw the gunman shooting and heard screams of "Get down!" Police and firefighters lined the highways and saluted as a hearse carried his body from a hospital to the country coroner's office.

Helus was a 29-year veteran looking forward to retirement in the next year or two, and leaves behind an adult son in addition to his wife, grieving colleagues said.
