Australian young gun Alex de Minaur has been beaten by top seed Stefanos Tsitsipas in the championship match of the Next Gen ATP Finals in Milan.

De Minaur wasted four successive match points at the end of the fourth set and Munar saved another on his service in the fifth but the 19-year-old booked his place in the final on his sixth opportunity.

After a sizzling week in a breakthrough year, in which he's climbed more than 170 ranking spots since December to No.31, de Minaur said he was just enjoying the moment.

Alex de Minaur has been hailed as a gift to Australian tennis by Rod Laver after signing off his breakout season with the ATP Tour Newcomer of the Year title.

In the absence of Alexander Zverev, who skipped the event for the second year after qualifying for the ATP Finals, 20-year-old Tsitsipas was the top seed and he made no secret of how much he wanted to come out on top. "But I know there's another star who had three wins in a row in the other part of the draw".

The pair went serve for serve as the rallies became drawn out chess matches, before Tsitsipas ran away in the tie-break for a 2-1 lead.

"Overall I'm very happy with my performance", said the player from Sydney.

"I've played some incredible tennis throughout the whole year". It's been a long season, a season I'll never forget. And both mentally and physically, I feel like it's time to take a break. 4-3 (3) in the short-set scoring format.

It is created to increase the number of pivotal moments in a match, while playing best-of-five sets does not alter the number of games required to win a match (12) from the traditional three-set scoring format.
