Florida governor’s race: DeSantis defeats Gillum; both had strong real estate backing

Misfire’ MSNBC Airs Fake Graphic Showing Andrew Gillum Winning Florida Vote Screenshots MSNBC Arr BNN 6 Nov 2018

The graphic appeared after a segment in which MSNBC's Joy Reid reported from Tallahassee praising Gillum's "energy" saying people were "excited" to vote for him.

DeSantis, whose endorsement from President Trump boosted his nomination for the Republican party, pledged during his campaign to keep taxes low in Florida, and improve the coastline through beach restoration and flood mitigation.

Florida A&M student Jalen McClees said that regardless of the result, Gillum made him proud.

The Democratic nominee is Tallahassee Mayor Andrew Gillum.

This race was supposed to be a blueprint for how Democrats could pull left on economics and cultural issues and win in swing states.

The gubernatorial race is arguably a bigger deal. The day after Gillum won the Democratic primary, DeSantis said Florida voters shouldn't "monkey this up" by electing Gillum.

Meanwhile, DeSantis, who's stepped down from US Congress to run in this race, told supporters in Orlando he has a "proven record of being the leader Florida needs". "He set the tone for us as African-Americans to do certain things", said McClees, 18.

"You should have a governor who can work constructively with the administration in Washington to make sure Florida is getting what it needs", DeSantis said. He had a race of his own for one of Florida's two seats in the U.S. Senate, challenging sitting Sen.

"The true story of this race is intense gratitude to President Trump".

Gillum told supporters in Wakulla that Tuesday is a choice between the "Trumpizing of America" and working together.

In Colorado, Democrat Jared Polis was set to become the first openly gay man to be elected governor of a U.S. state, after NBC News projected him to win against Republican Walker Stapleton.

But DeSantis won the governor's mansion by turning out the base and the state's growing share of conservative retirees from the Midwest, many of whom strongly back Trump.

Last week, both former President Barack Obama and President Donald Trump visited Florida to stump for candidates in their respective parties.

"I believe you have to turn a page on a campaign", DeSantis said, shortly before red and white confetti exploded at his election party. The GOP lawmaker defeated Tallahassee Mayor Andrew Gillum in one of the most high-profile governor's races of the 2018 cycle.

Republicans said they cared most about immigration, then health care, then foreign policy.
