Florida braces for recounts in governor, Senate races

The race during Tuesday's midterm United States election was one of America's most-watched, with the outgoing governor Scott mounting a tough challenge against three-time incumbent Nelson.

Gillum and DeSantis have not talked since election night, the source added.

"Mr. Scott - counting votes isn't partisan - it's democracy. It's a sad way for Bill Nelson to end his career", Chris Hartline said in a statement.

Gillum, who conceded the race Tuesday night, has grown more supportive of a recount.

During Scott's successful reelection campaign in 2014 against Charlie Crist, he lost the Keys vote by five percentage points. "Since that time, it has become clear there are many more uncounted ballots than was originally reported".

In a Senate race, Republican Rick Scott had 50.11 percent of the vote compared to Democrat Bill Nelson's 49.89 percent. DeSantis continues to move forward as the presumptive governor.

"I am pretty confident what you are going to see are markings that were not picked up by the machines or a calibration issue that was not registering that part of the ballot", he said.

The Republican candidate also tore into Susan Bucher, Palm Beach County Supervisor of Elections, alleging that she single-handedly determined voter intent on damaged absentee ballots instead of handing them over to the county's canvassing board. But the agency did not announce an investigation.

At an emergency hearing on Friday, Snipes' attorneys suggested this could slow counting.

Nelson did not make a public statement.

Florida Republican Senator Marco Rubio shared a video on his Twitter account on Thursday that allegedly showed ballots being transported by private vehicles and then being loaded onto what appeared to be a rented truck on election night.

Nikki Fried leads Matt Caldwell by just 575 votes, according to the Florida Division of Elections. The lawsuit also says the county has not followed the correct review procedures for determining whether ballots are "overvoted" or "undervoted", meaning there are too many or too few bubbles filled in.

"What's going on in Florida is a disgrace", he said. Under state law, elections must be machine-recounted if a candidate wins by less than 0.5 percent of the total vote.

Sarah Revell, a spokeswoman for the Florida Department of State, said she didn't know of any other recount in a governor or Senate race in state history. When those machine recounts indicate the margin is less than a quarter of 1 percent, it automatically triggers a manual recount.

Democratic legal teams kicked into action Thursday in Florida, demanding a recount they insist will ultimately declare Democratic Sen.

The AP has not called a victor in the Senate race.

And the recounts now have echoes of 2000: Gillum's campaign has hired Barry Richard to represent them during the recount.

"On Tuesday night, the Gillum for Governor campaign operated with the best information available about the number of outstanding ballots left to count", the statement read.

In the case of Florida still counting ballots more than 48 hours after polls closed, David Becker, the executive director for the Center for Election Innovation and Research, told NPR it is extremely common for a voting jurisdiction to be taking as long as Broward County is. "As supervisors across our state work tirelessly to do just that, our support has grown and we are now leading by just under 600 votes - Florida supervisors and canvassing boards are doing an incredible job of ensuring everyone's voices are heard and the process is fair and transparent".

DeSantis declined to discuss prospects for a recount, telling reporters he's "very proud to be elected".
