Final Fantasy 15 DLC Canceled; Director Tabata Leaves Square Enix

Final Fantasy XV DLC plans canceled amid Hajime Tabata's departure

Final Fantasy XV released in 2016 with a season pass containing extra content, but season pass holders won't be missing out, as it appears everything that was promised has been released. Square Enix used the stream to release a brief teaser for the expansion and reveal Final Fantasy XV Episode Ardyn Prologue, which is effectively two additional teasers to be released on December 15, 2018, and January 10, 2019.

In a surprising and drastic move, Square Enix have made a decision to can the production of more DLC for Final Fantasy XV and write off the costs of its production, as they look to point Luminous Productions toward creating new AAA games.

Tabata detailed his own departure during a livestream that was initially billed as a "Special Program" concerning the future of Final Fantasy XV.

First things first, the Final Fantasy XV DLC episodes Aranea, Lunafreye, and Noctis have all been cancelled barring Ardyn, which is still going ahead as scheduled and will be launching in March 2019.

A new company called Luminous Productions was formed, centred around the staff who had previously been developing the main game as part of Business Division 2, and have continued to work on the project since. However, no further details were divulged on what this new title is. Which itself came on the back of an earlier report that the company had posted an "extraordinary loss" of 3,733 million Yen (roughly $33) for the six-month period ending the 30th September. More info on that is here, but you can see the trailer for Episode Ardyn below.

Luminous was established back in March with the aim of developing blockbuster titles alongside "innovative games and entertainment", but has since refocused its efforts exclusively on triple-A development. This loss was announced in a financial statement alongside an explanation that Luminous would now move to making new AAA games, and it's now clear what it relates to.

Polygon said Tabata had "a project that I truly wish to solidify as my next challenge after FFXV".

"From this day on, I will cheer on and support Square Enix and Luminous Productions together with all you fans".
