Facebook Blocks 30 Accounts, 85 On Instagram Ahead Of US Midterm Polls

Facebook removes more pages, as FBI warns Russia still targeting American voters

The accounts were blocked and a further investigation is underway.

This year's contest has been portrayed as crucial by both Republicans and Democrats because both chambers of Congress, and the accompanying ability to pass or reject President Donald Trump's agenda, are up for grabs.

"Typically, we would be further along with our analysis before announcing anything publicly", Gleicher said in the statement. Nearly all the Facebook Pages associated with these accounts appear to be in the French or Russian languages, while the Instagram accounts seem to have mostly been in English - some were focused on celebrities, others political debate.

The announcement came shortly after United States law enforcement and intelligence agencies said they had no indication of efforts to disrupt election infrastructure but that Americans should be wary of Russian attempts to spread fake news.

Gleicher said the investigation began Sunday evening with a tip from USA law enforcement, which discovered the suspicious online activity.

They were widely criticized following the 2016 presidential election for allowing themselves to be exploited by foreign influence campaigns.

Facebook has taken down a network of Facebook pages and Instagram accounts just hours before polls open on election day.

Common Cause, the nonpartisan citizen's lobby, which was keeping a tally of disinformation on social media, said it was unable to tell immediately the genesis of the misleading Twitter posts. The accounts focused on everything from political debate to celebrities, though it remains unclear the extent to which the users were attempting to influence voters or distribute propaganda, if at all. In August, another 652 pages also linked to Iran were taken down.

Facebook's investigation said it had identified around 30 Facebook and 85 Instagram accounts linked to the suspect behavior.

Facebook, which has been blamed for doing too little to prevent misinformation efforts by Russian Federation and others in the 2016 USA election, now wants the world to know it is taking aggressive steps with initiatives like the war room.
