Driver ‘Huffing’ Before Killing Girl Scouts in Wisconsin Hit-and-Run

Man Accused of Killing 3 Girl Scouts and an Adult to be Charged with 4 Counts of Homicide Through Negligent Use of Vehicle

A 10-year-old girl has appeared in court in Wisconsin charged with killing a six-month-old boy.

Treu could face up to 13 criminal charges. They found Treu's truck abandoned.

Treu's bond was set at $250,000. The woman killed was the mother of one of the girls killed, Lake Hallie Police Department said in a statement. It was fast. It was from behind.

In a separate interview with The Associated Press, she said "Haylee would've never made it if she lost her mother".

"This is a disgusting reminder of our nation's epidemic of self-indulging with substance abuse without regard of the consequences", Lake Hallie Police Department Chief Cal Smokowicz said in a statement.

"Our hearts are broken for the girls and families of the Girl Scouts of the Northwestern Great Lakes", Sylvia Acevedo of Girl Scouts of the US said in a statement. "He said, 'If the doctors work real hard, sometimes God lets them come back'".

Haylee's mother, Sara Jo Schneider, 32, was with the Girl Scout troop and was also hit and killed, officials said. She in stable condition Monday at a hospital.

The victims were picking up trash in the ditches of County Highway P when they were struck.

Treu appeared in court via closed-circuit television Monday.

Treu and the unidentified passenger of the vehicle both turned themselves into different police departments later Saturday afternoon.

All members of the group - seven children and five adults - "were in the ditch, not on the pavement or gravel shoulder at the time of the crash" and were "wearing green highly visible safety vests", police said.

The Girl Scouts of the United States of America also spoke out Sunday to express their grief.

"You want to get mad about it, and you feel guilty about it, but you can't".

The Chippewa County Sheriff's Office said he is being held on four counts of homicide by negligent operation of a vehicle, four counts of homicide by intoxicated use of a vehicle, four counts of hit-and-run involving death and one count of hit-and-run involving great bodily harm. He surrendered to authorities Saturday.
