DeSantis defeats Gillum to keep GOP in control

Jewish voters hear last-minute warning about Gillum

The graphic showed Democrat Andrew Gillum defeating former GOP Rep. Ron DeSantis by 49.4 percent to 48.8 percent with 99 percent of the precincts reporting. He enjoyed support from President Trump throughout his campaign.

Monday night, with Sean "Diddy" Combs and other big stars by his side, Gillum campaigned until the very end with a huge rally and concert that went until early this morning at Florida A&M University.

DeSantis' win represents an extension of a decade of trifecta Republican control of the swing state and a resounding win for Trump, who aggressively inserted himself into the race.

DeSantis gave up running for his congressional seat in order to focus on the race for governor. "If they don't show up he's going out lose by a point or two".

Had Gillum won, he would have been the first black governor of Florida. He also said he intends to stay involved in Florida politics. "Let's bring this home", he said, echoing Gillum's campaign refrain.

After his concession speech, supporters hugged one another.

Mr Gillum has conceded the race.

"In four years, he'll be able to run again", said Cindy Martin, 50, of Pensacola. Obviously, we do not yet have any vote totals here, the night before the election.

In turn, Gillum was assailed over alleged ties to a radical far-left group associated with anti-Semitism and Palestinian terrorism. Phillis and Jeffrey voted for Andrew Gillum. "He set the tone for us as African-Americans to do certain things", said McClees, 18.

"This is a movement from people from all walks of life". "But I want you to know that, in spite of our congratulating him on his victory this evening, nothing that we believe in is compromised", Gillum said.

DeSantis called Gillum a "committed leftist ideologue".

His victory comes after a heated campaign to succeed Republican Gov. Rick Scott, who is term-limited. Marco Rubio made a decision to run for re-election. The 40-year-old is pro-gun, anti-immigration, anti-LGBTQ, and anti-women's rights.

DeSantis is a former Navy officer who graduated from Yale University, where he was the school's baseball captain, before getting his law degree at Harvard University.

On issues like climate change, which is increasingly important in Florida, Mr DeSantis has said he didn't want to be known as an "alarmist", while Mr Gillum promised to be a governor who "believes in science". Trump joined in, tweeting similar messages.

As Trump tried to help DeSantis, Former President Barack Obama and former Vice President Joe Biden held rallies to aide Gillum and Sen.
