At least 13 killed in California bar shooting

Forensic officers work at the scene of the mass shooting

The gunman who killed 12 people at a country music bar in Southern California went on social media during the attack and posted about his mental state and whether people would believe he was sane, a law enforcement official said Friday.

Dozens of patrons at the Thousand Oaks, California bar where a gunman killed 12 people late Wednesday are survivors of the massacre at a country music festival in Las Vegas previous year, according to witnesses.

He was "on his way to fulfilling his dream" of serving his country in the USA military, the grieving father added.

As he first spoke with reporters after getting the news, Jason recalled the last words he spoke to his son. Long's cousin, AJ Schramm, told CBS News that Long's father died from cancer when he was young.

A woman who fled the Borderline Bar and Grill is hugged by relatives in Thousand Oaks, Calif. Nov. 8, 2018.

"Somebody has missed something here", she said. "He didn't think it was real", Tim Dominguez said.

The elder Coffman said today he told his son not to drink and drive and that the last thing he said to him was: "I love you".

Long was in the Marines from 2008 to 2013, rose to the rank of corporal and served in Afghanistan in 2010-11 before he was honorably discharged, the military said. When the Las Vegas gunman opened fire from a 32nd-floor hotel room, Kelly said he threw a friend to the ground before helping get her out of the area and into a room. I saw him point to the back of the cash register, and he just kept firing.

Pastor Thomas Burke served with Long in the same regiment. He told CNN that Long's battalion was in Helmand province when the fighting was very intense.

Another law enforcement source confirmed to Fox News that the shooter posted "rants" before the massacre on his Facebook account.

After Long left the armed forced, he wanted a change in career path.

Law enforcement agencies, firefighters and other first responders, along with several ambulances, additional units from the California Highway Patrol, Simi Valley and the Federal Bureau of Investigation, reached the spot soon after the shooting was reported.

"Our hearts & prayers go out to the victims, their families, & Borderline Bar & Grill in Thousand Oaks!" wrote Locash, the duo whose song "I Love This Life" accompanies the bar's YouTube video promoting College Country Night. "I found out a little too late that just wasn't the job for me". "There were probably 12 shots before I got out the front door". Parts of that major freeway were closed in Los Angeles and Ventura counties, fire officials said.

His wife, Julie Hanson, said they consulted a neighbor before deciding to make the call and were concerned Long would harm himself or his mother. "I don't want thoughts", she pleaded emphatically.

Ventura county sheriff Geoff Dean said sheriff's deputies were called to Long's home in Newbury Park, five miles west of Thousand Oaks, in April 2018. It is not known when the collision was.

"We have no idea what the motive was at this time", Dean said. "When you call 911, he's one of the guys you want showing up".

He told local network KTLA: "It sounded like he was tearing down the walls of the house".

"I don't want prayers. I mean, it's a quiet neighbourhood".

"He went in there to save lives".

Long's mother was said to have "lived in fear" of David and what he would do. She was appalled that such bloodshed had come to her community.
