At Least 12 Dead in California Bar Shooting

At least eleven wounded in shooting at bar in southern California

Thirteen people have died, including a gunman and a sheriff's sergeant, after a mass shooting at a California bar popular with college students, police said.

Ventura County sheriff Geoff Dean said there are "multiple other victims of different levels of injuries". They found 12 people dead inside, including the gunman, who was discovered in office and had apparently shot himself, the sheriff said. Hindustan Times delivers the news across all social media platforms, on the web, and at your doorstep.

The incident happened at the Borderline Bar and Grill, about 40 miles north of LA.

Police had multiple run-ins with Long in the past, Dean said.

"Sgt. Helus will be transported via motorcade from Los Robles Hospital to westbound Janss Road", the department said in a statement.

"I mind my own business and they did theirs too", he said in a brief telephone interview.

A police officer, described as a sheriff's sergeant, and the gunman are among the 13 confirmed to have died.

There were hundreds of people packed inside Borderline Bar and Grill when a gunman burst inside throwing smoke grenades and firing dozens of rounds, witnesses and authorities said.

Nick Steinwender, student body president at nearby California Lutheran University, rushed to the scene when he heard about a shooting at the bar where he knew friends and fellow students were. "I just started hearing these big pops".

"We knew he was going there, to know he may not come home is another thing", Jason Coffman told the station.

Pepperdine University freshman Alaina Housley, 18, was at the bar with several friends for a night of line dancing.

Another witness said there was numerous shots fired inside the bar.

He said first responders arrived just three minutes after the first emergency calls from the venue were made. My son thought it was a joke, so I pulled him down and got some cover.

"He was totally committed, he gave his all, and tonight, as I told his wife, he died a hero", he said.

Kuredjian and others described Thousand Oaks as a usually placid place.

"It was really, really, really shocking", she told KABC-TV as she stood with her father in the Borderline auto park. Shortly before 1:30 a.m. Thursday, Capt. Garo Kuredjian of the Ventura County Sheriff's Office told reporters that the shooter was still "confined" inside the restaurant and that there was no longer an immediate threat to residents in the area.
