Another year, another decrease in life expectancy in the US

Most races and ethnic groups, including black males, Hispanic males and Hispanic females, saw no significant changes in their death rate year over year.

Life expectancy in the United States has dropped again, continuing a three-year decline driven by suicides and deaths from drugs overdoses.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention released its latest data on mortality rates this morning, and the news is not good.

"Life expectancy gives us a snapshot of the nation's overall health and these sobering statistics are a wake-up call that we are losing too many Americans, too early and too often, to conditions that are preventable", he said. "It shouldn't be declining in the United States". In 2016, there were 45,000.

The last time the USA experienced this long of a general decline in life expectancy was in the late 1910s, when the Spanish Influenza and World War I killed almost 1 million Americans.

The rate increased to 39 per 100,000 among 35- to 44-year-olds.

"We've never really seen anything like this", said Robert Anderson, who oversees CDC death statistics. The rate of death increased from 729 deaths per 100,000 people in 2016 to 732 deaths, an increase of 0.4 percent.

The Washington Post notes that other factors contributed to an increased death rate a year ago, including a spike in influenza deaths as well as fatalities from chronic low respiratory diseases, Alzheimer's disease and strokes.

"I really do believe that people are increasingly hopeless, and that that leads to drug use, it leads potentially to suicide", said Dr. William Dietz, a disease prevention expert at George Washington University. The female suicide rate rose by 53 percent between 1999 and 2017, with a 26 percent increase for men during the same period. Accidental overdoses account for more than a third of unintentional injury deaths while intentional drug overdoses account for about a tenth of the suicides.

The rate more than tripled for both men and women, with a slightly higher increase for women, although the overall death rate was approximately twice as high for men as for women.

The authors concluded that while further research is needed to assess the dangers of the show, "the findings suggest a particular vulnerability to the show's themes among youths at risk of suicide", and that steps are needed to be taken to ameliorate those problems.

Drug overdoses set another annual record in 2017, cresting at 70,237 - up from 63,632 the year before, the government said in a companion report.

Overall, suicides increased by a third between 1999 and 2017, the report showed. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, opioid-related overdoses have contributed to the life expectancy drop in the U.S. There were 14,495 overdose deaths attributed to narcotics such as oxycodone and hydrocodone and 3,194 from methadone, which is used as a painkiller. Preliminary data from the CDC indicate that a state's overdose trend closely tracks the number of fentanyl-related deaths.

Now, the reports released by the CDC did not offer only bad news.

In 2017, the suicide rate for the most rural counties (20 per 100,000) outpaced that in the most urban counties (about 11 per 100,000). Earlier CDC reports have noted increasing rates of suicide by gun.
