Amazon HQ2 to be split evenly between two cities

DC Suburb Likely To Get Second Amazon Headquarters

Such a move could also reduce the risk that Amazon's infusion of tens of thousands of workers into a city would have disruptive effects on housing, transportation or other urban issues.

Just when you thought the Amazon HQ2 sweepstakes couldn't get crazier, it did.

Amazon will not choose one city to open its second headquarters - "HQ2" - but instead will split the baby and open two new headquarters in different cities, the Wall Street Journal reported Monday.

A group of developers has already purchased a site in Dallas.

Referencing "a person familiar with the matter", the Journal cites the main motivation as the need to recruit top tech talent across multiple locales. And transit issues are also a factor, the report said. This plan will split employees between the two headquarters at 25,000 each. Two of the biggest known packages include Montgomery County, Maryland, which offered $8.5 billion in incentives, and Newark, New Jersey, which offered $7 billion. The paper earlier reported that New York City, Dallas, and Crystal City, Virginia, were among the finalists for what Amazon has called its HQ2. However, the company is not exactly denying the report's accuracy.

Mayor Hogsett says he expects Amazon's decision soon after the midterm elections Tuesday so that the five billion dollar bombshell doesn't change any political races for the victor or the loser locations. "If Amazon ends up splitting its expansion into mini HQs, that is called.opening satellite offices, which scarcely deserves the buckets of ink spilled so far", said Nick Wingfield of The Information.
