When Hurricane Michael will bring rain to Richmond

Michael is the 13th named storm of the 2018 hurricane season.

"This storm will be life-threatening and extremely risky", Scott said at a press briefing. "Well-built framed homes may incur major damage or removal of roof decking and gable ends".

Rick Scott issued a state of emergency for 26 counties on Sunday, as member station WFSU reports.

In some parts of the Florida coast, storm surges are projected to approach eleven feet.

As of the 5 p.m. advisory, Michael is now a Category 1 hurricane with sustained winds of 80 miles per hour. Additional strengthening is expected during the next few days, and Michael is forecast to become a hurricane Monday night or Tuesday. A major hurricane is defined as Category 3 or greater on the Saffir-Simpson scale, with sustained winds of 111mph or greater.

Another TT national, Ray Mohammed, said Florida has been through worse storms and was confident the state would ride out Michael.

A tropical storm watch has been issued from the Suwannee River in the Big Bend, south to Anna Maria Island, just south of Tampa Bay.

According to the hurricane center, one potential impact from a Category 3 hurricane is that "electricity and water will be unavailable for several days to weeks after the storm passes".

"Alabama is once again in the path of a hurricane, but I know Alabamians will once again come together and be prepared for whatever Michael may bring", said Gov. Ivey. On average, the area has had about five by this time. "This storm will be life-threatening and extremely unsafe".

Forecasters say the storm will gain more intensity through Tuesday, with a chance it will weaken somewhat as it nears land in Florida.

Locally, Manatee County Public Safety officials were not ready to declare a local state of emergency, but are in a "monitor and wait" pattern, director Bob Smith said during a news conference.

Scott encouraged county officials to make decisions about evacuations and shelters on Monday, as by Tuesday it could be too late to get the word out.

The Florida panhandle will be hardest hit, with parts of the Tallahassee and Panama City areas getting 12 inches of rainfall along with damaging winds.

The storm was centered about 20 miles (30 kilometers) off the western tip of Cuba, and about 145 miles (230 kilometers) east-northeast of Cozumel, Mexico. This rainfall could lead to life-threatening flash floods and mudslides in areas of mountainous terrain.

Tropical storm force winds of 175 miles per hour were reported extending beyond the center of the storm, said the center.

Once Michael makes landfall, it is expected to move northeastward across the Florida panhandle into southern Georgia. The rains in Cuba's west were expected to begin Sunday night and continue Monday.
