Vizag under danger radar as Titli Cyclone inches towards the coastline

2 killed as Cyclone Titli smashes eastern India

Titli Cyclone has been upgraded to "very severe cyclonic storm". In 1999, a devastating cyclone killed more than 15,000 people.

According to officials who are monitoring the cyclone from the coastal Doppler weather radars at Visakhapatnam, Gopalpur and Paradip, the cyclone is very likely to move north-westwards during the next 12 hours and then re-curve north-eastwards towards Gangetic West Bengal across Odisha.

Cyclone Titli hit the Odisha coast at Gopalpur with a wind speed of 126 Kmph around 6:15 am today.

This is the second severe cyclone alert for Odisha in the last two months, after "Cyclone Daye" crossed the Odisha coast on September 20 and triggered heavy downpour.

People in coastal areas of Odisha and northern Andhra Pradesh are preparing to face the full onslaught of the cyclone. The state's disaster management chief, D Varaprasad, said that shortages of drinking water were a concern in many areas. The IMD has said the region will experience very heavy rain, which could lead to flooding, and strong winds. Odisha's Gopalpur reported 102 kmph wind velocity and Andhra Pradesh's Kalingapatnam reported 56 kmph surface wind speed.

The IMD advised total suspension of fishing operations and shifting of coastal hutment dwellers to safe places.

The latest observations indicate that "Titli", over west-central Bay of Bengal moved north-northwestwards with a speed of about 19 kmph during the past six hours.

Storm surge of height of about 1 metre above astronomical tide is very likely to inundate the low-lying areas of Ganjam, Khurda and Puri districts, it said.

This meeting was attended by State chief secretary, development commissioner, Special Relief Commissioner (SRC), heads of various departments and director of the meteorology department.
