Two Britons reportedly killed as flash flooding hits Majorca

Majorca Floods: Two Brits Reported Dead After Heavy Rain Sweeps Island

The missing British pair were believed to have been travelling in a taxi when the vehicle was caught in the flood.

Two of the victims were British, a senior official from the San Llorenc mayor's office, Antonia Bauza, told radio station Cadena Ser. The driver was also killed.

Pedro Sanchez, who had been filming a swollen river with his mobile phone, said he escaped through the window of his auto and swam to safety after the waters rose two metres in 30 seconds, engulfing his vehicle.

After opening his academy to flood victims, Rafael Nadal volunteered to help clear homes of water and mud.

Rescue workers and military units from the Spanish mainland were heading to the area which is popular with British holidaymakers. "We had to swim to try to survive". Angela Alfaro had to spend the night in a shelter because a road section leading to Sant Llorenc had collapsed.

"As far as I know, I have lost everything", she told an AP camera crew.

Another resident, Tomas Oliver, cleaned his house as he celebrated that all the damage in his household had been material.

In all, more than 500 people helped with rescue and cleaning up operations, as authorities said the rainstorm was unlike any people could remember.

Rivers burst their banks, and swamped homes - forcing some people to take shelter in a sports center in the nearby town of Manacor.

The torrential rain also brought flooding to the city of Barcelona on the Spanish mainland.

"This is hardly seen in the islands", Del Campo said.

Dramatic video footage on social media shows raging torrents of water gushing through the streets of the town, with reports that more than 20 centimetres of rain fell in just four hours.

The weather agency, AEMET, said more heavy rainfall is expected Wednesday in eastern and southern parts of the Iberian peninsula.
