Trump lashes out at Warren over DNA test, calls her 'phoney!'

U.S. Sen. Elizabeth Warren D-Mass. speaks during a town hall-style gathering in Woburn Ma

President Donald Trump has lobbed racist "Pocahontas" insults at Warren for years, and he dismissed the results as phony after she released a political ad about the DNA test.

CNN editor-at-large Chris Cillizza says Warren's goal "was to take the issue of her heritage off the table for nervous Democrats and to show that she was ready, willing and able to stand up to President Donald Trump if and when the time came that she was the party's nominee against him in 2020". However, the results, which identified Native American DNA from six to 10 generations ago, were immediately misinterpreted, reports The Washington Post.

The results, as shared with The Boston Globe, reportedly reveal "strong evidence" the MA senator had a Native American ancestor dating back six to 10 generations. This made it sound like Warren had less Native American DNA than the average European-American. Even they don't want her.

People who casually mention some Indian heritage are "dishonoring legitimate tribal governments and their citizens whose ancestors are well documented and whose heritage is proven", said Chuck Hoskin Jr., secretary of state for the Cherokee Nation.

The email continued, "We support and respect the Cherokee nation's statement that Warren has "undermin (ed) tribal interests with her continued claims of tribal heritage". The tribes and only the tribes determine citizenship", said Warren in the Globe interview. She is 1/64th Native American at most, and may be as little as 1/1024th Native American. "I think she's guilty of claiming she's an American Indian but has no proof - and then [is] using it for applications for college and for political reasons".

Tuesday morning, Trump responded to the results on Twitter, saying she was an "amazing con" and a "complete and total fraud".

Trump's references to Warren as "fake Pocahontas" are particularly offensive because they show how pop culture has glossed over the treatment of Native Americans, particularly women, said Chelsey Branham, a member of the Chickasaw Nation. There is no evidence that Harvard ever publicly described her in that manner.

A former dean of Penn Law School told the Post that Warren's "appointment was based on the excellence of her scholarship and teaching" and he did not know "whether members of the faculty were even aware of her ancestry".

Warren's DNA analysis, conducted by a privately hired scientist who is an expert on Native American genomics, found that her Native American ancestry was between 0.09 percent and 1.5 percent.

"That will not be something I enjoy doing either", he added.

Following yesterday's impromptu press conference, in which Trump gave his Who Cares? response to Warren's just-announced DNA results, Warren quickly turned the president's words into a fundraising move, a tweeted video called "This Is What Lying Looks Like".

On Monday, Warren decided she'd had enough.
