Tropical Storm Oscar strengthens but still no threat to land World News

National Hurricane Center Subtropical Storm Oscar 2018 Projected Path

Oscar, which became a tropical storm Saturday, is strengthening and expected to become a hurricane later Sunday but land isn't threatened, according to the National Hurricane Center. Oscar is forecast to begin moving toward the north and then the northeast by early next week.

Forecasters at the Miami-based hurricane center say Oscar should continue westward during the night before beginning a turn toward the west-northwest. This storm is about 730 miles southeast of Bermuda with sustained winds of 75 mph.

Oscar has become the eighth hurricane of the 2018 Atlantic season, but the storm is far out in the Atlantic where it poses no threat to land. The peak of hurricane season is late August to early September, but early October also can see many hurricanes, AccuWeather noted. This system quickly strengthened and became a tropical storm on November 9th and a category 1 hurricane on November 11th.

The storm does not pose threat to Florida, U.S.

At the center's 8 a.m. Thursday advisory, the system's shower and thunderstorm activity showed enough signs of organization to give forecasters confidence to predict an 80 percent likelihood formation of a tropical storm in the next five days.

The storm also hit Georgia, the Carolinas, and Virginia.
