The Walking Dead Season 9 Had the Lowest Rated Premiere Ever

Walking Dead season 9 premiere loses nearly half its audience

Weeks after Telltale Games announced it would be laying off a majority of its staff, another studio has revealed that it will be finishing the final season of Telltale's The Walking Dead adventure game series.

Still, The Walking Dead's ratings peaked in season 5 (with a season premiere of more than 17 million viewers) and have ebbed each year since. That's the lowest rating in the demo for a season premiere since the show began, with the series premiere pulling in a 2.7 rating back in 2010. That's down 47 percent from last year's Season 8 premiere, which was watched live by 11.4 million viewers, and down about 11 million total viewers from the cliffhanger-resolving Season 7 premiere.

Despite the bad news on the ratings front, the season nine premiere did offer some hope.

The post-apocalyptic drama's ninth season is attempting to pave a new path for the series, shifting the focus towards the crumbling world around the characters as nature reclaims it while also focusing on how the various communities will restore order into the world.

To be fair, it's still one of the biggest shows on television, behind only This Is Us in key demo ratings.

This has nothing to do with Telltale Games and everything to do with the people involved with making "The Walking Dead" game and trying to take care of them in the meantime the best way we can. More and more people are watching on a delayed viewing schedule, either through On Demand or Apps, or even just waiting until the full season is available on Netflix to binge it.

The slide was despite pre-season buzz about the fate of Rick Grimes and Maggie Greene, as stars Andrew Lincoln and Lauren Cohan have confirmed they're departing the show this year. AMC also notes it had a record day of sign-ups for its AMC Premiere service, which lets subscribers watch the premiere a day early and without ads.
