Last week, a rocket from Gaza hit a home in the southern Israeli city of Beer Sheva, prompting Israel to carry out airstrikes against almost two dozen Hamas targets in Gaza.

Israeli fighter jets struck a four-story building which the IDF said was serving as the new headquarters of Hamas' General Security Services in Gaza City's Daraj neighborhood. Loud explosions were heard following the attacks.

The Israeli military has accused Syria and Iran of responsibility in a night-long barrage of rocket attacks out of the Gaza Strip and has threatened to strike Iranian targets in Syria in response.

"At least 14 rockets were fired from Gaza at Israeli civilians", military spokesman Lt. Col. Jonathan Conricus said on Twitter.

Israel and Hamas have fought three wars since 2008 and much of the global community considers the Islamist movement a terrorist organisation.

Egypt and the United Nations have been brokering indirect negotiations between Hamas and Israel with the aim of calming the situation amid fears of another war.

Meanwhile, clashes also broke out between Palestinian and Israeli army forces near Ramallah, in the West Bank, with early reports suggesting at least 9 Palestinians were wounded by Israeli live fire.

"We hold Hamas responsible for everything coming from Gaza", he said.

On Wednesday, Egyptian intelligence officials met representatives of Palestinian factions in Gaza.

Ezzeddin al-Qassam Brigades, the military wing of the Hamas resistance movement, expressed its readiness to strike the occupied territories "with thousands of missiles". The internationally recognized Abbas lost control of Gaza in the 2007 takeover.

Palestinians have gathered for protests along the border at least weekly since March 30.

Earlier in the week, Israel's defense minister, Avigdor Liberman, vowed to step up the country's response to these ongoing protests. A Gaza militant fatally shot an Israeli soldier in July.

More than 200 Palestinians have so far been killed and over 20,000 others wounded by Israeli troops in the protests, according to the latest figures released by the Gaza Health Ministry. Though he did not accuse Hamas of taking part in the launches, Brig.

The Friday border marches however drew 16,000 protesters, some of them clashing with Israeli soldiers.

One day earlier, a rocket from Gaza landed in southern Israel.
