Storm Callum: More rain set to bring further disruption

Storm Callum is expected to push north-eastwards to the west of Britain bringing heavy rain and damaging winds

Hundreds of homes are without power after winds of up to 76mph battered Western parts of the United Kingdom last night.

Yellow Met Office warnings are in place for wind and rain in the Highlands and Islands and Strathclyde areas throughout Friday.

Paul Hand of ESB Networks said 30,000 homes and business were without power, but he anticipated this figure increasing as the storm moves north.

Winds of up to 130 km/h are set to hit parts of the country with high risk of flooding and damage in coastal areas.

The Met Office has issued a series of weather warnings stretching from the north-west coast of Scotland to Land's End, including Northern Ireland, while a number of flood warnings and alerts are in force across south-west England and south Wales.

Met Eireann announced that weather warnings for the west and northwest coast would remain in place today until 5pm.

Sky's weather forecaster Kirsty McCabe said: "During Saturday, pulses of rain will slowly edge northwards into much of Scotland, while also affecting parts of Ireland and Northern Ireland".

A yellow "be aware" warning is in place for the rest of Wales for strong winds.

Rainfall totals could reach as high as 150mm over the Brecon Beacons, almost as high as the monthly average of 170mm for Wales.

"The rain is also of concern with a lot of it to come through 36 hours over Friday and Saturday, especially for western parts of England, south west Scotland and Wales".

"The rainfall has been building up through Friday and it continues through Saturday".
