Soyuz Rocket Failure: What Went Wrong, and What Happens Next

Soyuz MS-10 Launch Fails Due to Booster Issue Seeing Astronauts Returned to Earth

The rocket was carrying a Russian cosmonaut and an American astronaut who had set off for a six-month mission at the International Space Station, on a relatively rare two-man launch.

Just two minutes after liftoff, the crew of the Soyuz MS-10 found themselves in a situation that every astronaut since the beginning of the manned space program has trained for, but very few have ever had to face: a failure during launch.

According to Nasa, the crew is returned to Earth inside the Soyuz capsule "in a ballistic descent mode". Dzhezkazgan is about 450 kilometres northeast of Baikonur. Soviet cosmonauts Vladimir Titov and Gennady Strekalov jettisoned and landed safely near the launch pad after the Soyuz explosion.

Photographs released by Roscosmos after the rescue showed the two astronauts smiling and relaxing on sofas at a town near their landing site as they underwent blood pressure and cardiac tests.

"We are in communication with the crew at this point and hearing they are in good condition", a NASA spokeswoman in Houston said on the space agency's live video feed of the launch. This was Ovchinin's second trip to the station, and Hague's first trip.

A Canadian astronaut's scheduled trip to the International Space Station is in limbo after the spacecraft he was to use failed and made an emergency landing in Kazakhstan.

Russian cosmonaut Aleksey Ovchinin retained an enviable sang-froid Thursday as he realised while travelling at thousands of miles an hour that his spacecraft would have to make an emergency landing +. He didn't say if he suspected any of the station's crew.

Rogozin said at the time that the launch of the 2.6 billion-rouble ($39.02 million) satellite had been due to an embarrassing programming error. "Search and rescue teams are in the air and heading towards the expected touchdown location for the Soyuz spacecraft returning to Earth carrying two crew members".

But it is also unlikely any Soyuz missions will fly for a while now until both NASA and Roscosmos, the Russian space agency, have got to the bottom of what went wrong today.

-Russian cooperation in space.

Russian space officials have said they are investigating whether a hole that caused an oxygen leak on the ISS was drilled deliberately by astronauts.

Hague, who only joined NASA's astronaut corps in 2013, was on his first space mission.

Russian Deputy Prime Minister Yuri Borisov said all manned launches will be suspended pending an investigation into the cause of the failure. Neither NASA or Roscosmos will be jumping to any conclusions, but Russian Federation has promised a full investigation and is forming a team to look into how and why the rocket failed as it did.
