Saudi Crown Prince Ordered Journalist Critic's Detention — WashPost

Vice President Mike Pence signals the USA may help investigate the disappearance of the Washington Post contributor and prominent Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi.

The U.S. has been in contact with Turkish officials about the case, Trump said.

"We can not let this happen, to reporters, to anybody", Trump said.

A group of Republican and Democrat senators united to demand an investigation into the disappearance of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi at a consulate in Turkey. It's a very sad situation.

Pro-government Turkish daily Sabah on Wednesday published preliminary evidence from investigators it said identified a 15-member Saudi intelligence team involved in Khashoggi's disappearance. "And we want do get to the bottom of it", the United States president said.

National security adviser John Bolton and senior adviser Jared Kushner, Trump's son-in-law, talked with Salman on Tuesday, while Secretary of State Mike Pompeo had a follow-up call with the Saudi leader to reiterate the US demand for information about the case, the White House said.

"We're demanding everything", Trump told reporters.

The footage shows some of the Saudis leaving a hotel and Khashoggi entering the consulate, walking past a black Mercedes van with diplomatic plates parked adjacent to the entrance.

"Is it possible for there to be no camera systems at the Saudi Arabia consulate, where the event took place?", Erdogan was quoted as saying by Hurriyet.

A source told the Washington Post that USA intelligence "intercepted communications of Saudi officials discussing a plan to capture him".

While the Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has so far been reluctant to confirm the killing of Khashoggi, grisly details of the murder and the operation to assassinate the Saudi journalist are being released by senior Turkish security officials.

Saudi Arabia has denied any involvement in Khashoggi's disappearance and said he left the consulate shortly after he entered last Tuesday.

Asked about the invitation, Cengiz told Turkish state broadcaster TRT on Thursday: "I am not thinking anything on this subject at the moment".

Mostly, users have been sharing shock at the news, but amongst the posts of mourning, as well as hopes that the news might prove untrue, Saudi loyalists have been flooding social media with theories of their own.

The revelation marks a potentially explosive twist in the case of Mr. Khashoggi, 59, who vanished a week ago while visiting the Saudi Consulate in Istanbul.

Mr Erdogan was quoted by Turkish media today as telling journalists flying with him back home from a visit to Hungary that "we can not remain silent to such an incident".

Reporters Without Borders said in a statement that between 25 and 30 professional and non-professional journalists are now detained in Saudi Arabia.

More than a week has passed since our last meeting outside the consulate of Saudi Arabia, before Jamal Khashoggi's disappearance became global news.

The issue threatened the strong relationship the Trump administration has constructed with Mohammed Bin Salman.

Bird has also called on the trustees of the Natural History Museum in London not to provide the museum as a venue for the Saudi Arabia annual national day celebration, organised by the Saudi embassy, and called for a protest outside the building. "We will probably know in the very short future".

Khashoggi, who has penned articles critical of some of Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman's policies in the Arab and Western press, was a Washington Post op-ed writer.

The administration also relies on Saudi support for its Middle East agenda to counter Iranian influence, fight extremism and support an expected peace plan between Israel and the Palestinians.
