Samsung Galaxy A9 (2018) with 4 cameras announced: Specifications, features

Samsung Galaxy A9 announced

As far as the cameras are concerned, the Samsung Galaxy A9 (2018) packs a 24-megapixel (f/1.7) + 10-megapixel (f/2.4) + 8-megapixel (f/2.4) primary camera on the rear and a 24-megapixel front shooter for selfies.

Samsung is expected to officially announce the Galaxy A9 on October 11.

The concept behind this camera overload is similar to what we've seen on Huawei's P20 Pro and LG V40, both of which have three rear cameras - there's one main sensor and the other sensors do specific tasks. It also has a 10MP f/2.4 sensor with a 2x optical zoom feature, an ultra wide 120-degree 8MP f/2.4 lens and a 5MP sensor (f/2.2) for depth. Up front is a 24MP f/2.0 camera for selfies.

Samsung describes the Galaxy A9 as the world's first "quad-camera" phone.

Measuring 162.5 x 77 x 7.8mm, the Galaxy A9 is actually slightly taller and wider than the Samsung Galaxy Note 9, which has a fractionally bigger 6.4-inch display. This dual-SIM smartphone comes laden with Android 8.1 Oreo out of the box. With the introduction of quad-camera setups, Samsung is also rumored to include a new cooling system that improves heat dissipation in the camera area.

You do lose out on a feature or two, such as wireless charging and the main camera only featuring one aperture. There is no doubt that there is the physical limitation to fit in a mechanical zoom lens in such a tiny space to offer multiple focal lengths so the next best thing is to just add more cameras with lenses for different focal lengths.

The Samsung Galaxy A9 (2018) is powered by a 3800mAh.

The company recently launched the Galaxy A7 in the country at Rs 23,990.

How much those four cameras are worth it to you will likely come down in price.

Speaking about the new A9, DJ Koh, President and CEO of IT & Mobile Communications Division at Samsung Electronics, said: "As a global leader in smartphone innovation, we understand the demand for meaningful innovation in a fast-paced world driven by visual communication". In Europe, it will start at €599 / £549 (between $700-$725), with the 8GB variant sure to be a little more.

The Galaxy A9 (2018) release date is set for November, with the full list of markets still to be confirmed.
