Real Madrid's goal drought their worst since 1985

Los Blancos were pushing for a return to winning ways after they suffered a shock 1-0 loss to CSKA Moscow in the UEFA Champions League earlier this week.

Meanwhile, Gareth Bale and Karim Benzema - who were both substituted during the surprise loss - have joined Madrid's growing injury list.

Lopetegui has only been in the job since July after he replaced Zinedine Zidane, but following something of a honeymoon period, he really has hit work cut out.

Despite their ragged form, Real are joint top of the La Liga table with Barcelona and Alaves, although Barca will march three points clear at the top if they win at Valencia on Sunday.

"A coach does not think about it", Lopetegui told a news conference.

Since Abelardo became coach, only Real, Barcelona and Atletico have taken more points than them in La Liga.

Real boss Julen Lopetegui confirmed Bale was an injury replacement: "Gareth had [an injury], so we had to make decisions regarding changes".

Alaves continued to snaffle out any danger, though, and when the deadlock was finally broken it was down the other end off the head of Garcia, who turned the visitors' frustrations into despair.

After the Alav├ęs defeat, the Real Madrid defender was keen to stress positivity and unity going forward, particularly given that Madrid have now gone over six hours without finding the net: "Scoring is the decisive part of the game".

Madrid are next in action at home to Levante after the worldwide break.

"It's the dream victory because we scored so late and they couldn't even take kick off", he said.
