President Trump says Defense Secretary Mattis is 'sort of a Democrat'

Donald Trump

The career of the USA defence secretary was thrown into doubt last night after President Trump said that General James Mattis was "sort of a Democrat" and implied that he could be removed.

"It could be that he is", Trump told CBS News' Lesley Stahl on "60 Minutes" last night when asked if Mattis is on the way out.

"It could be that he is". I will say this: I don't want to give trillions and trillions of dollars. We get along very well. That the President's vanishingly rare appearance on a nonpartisan news program had resulted in a spectacle in which randomly assorted questions were bulldozed by a man eager to speak, and in which the interviewer generally left the viewers to decide what those answers meant without the benefit of meaningful follow-up, made the point clear.

Trump said Mattis had joined him for lunch two days earlier and the retired Marine four-star general had not told him that he was leaving.

"I didn't really make fun of her", Trump replied, adding he thought Ford had been treated "with great respect" despite the fact "there are those that think she shouldn't have".

That's also why he had Kanye West in the White House last week, and why you will be seeing his face and hearing his lies everywhere on TV the next three weeks. Just a year earlier, Trump had mocked Kim as "Little Rocket Man" while kim returned the insult, calling the president a "mentally deranged US dotard".

President Donald Trump: It well, let it be an embrace.

Trump said the turnover was likely to continue.

"I have a very good relationship with him". They say that we had hurricanes that were far worse than what we just had with Michael. Trump and Stahl had a much more contentious interview than Mrs. Trump and ABC correspondent Tom Llamas, but, reflecting on their chat, Stahl told her coanchors that to her it felt as though Trump truly "enjoyed" sparring with her. I have a good chemistry with him.

"When it comes to Stahl's questions about Kim, I love the president's comment, because don't forget this president's leadership has brought three Americans home from North Korea". In a statement after the book's publication, Mattis said that "the contemptuous words about the president attributed to me in Woodward's book were never uttered by me or in my presence". I'm not a baby.

President Donald Trump: Well, it depends on what the sanction is.

On the tried and trusted subject of Russia's alleged, but unproven interference in the 2016 presidential elections, Trump said that while he believes Russian Federation did meddle, "China meddled too", and China is "a bigger problem".
