Photos and videos show mass destruction from 'Monstrous' Michael in Florida

Activists say the anti-environment policies of the Florida governor, Rick Scott, who they have nicknamed Red Tide Rick, are at least partly responsible for the unprecedented scale of this year's outbreak of a naturally occurring phenomenon.

Michael killed at least six people - including a man who died when a tree toppled onto his house in Florida and a girl who died when debris fell into a home in Georgia, officials and local media said.

The US Army said more than 2,000 Florida National Guard soldiers were working on the recovery operations.

Two deaths have so far been attributed to the storm, with one person said to have died as the result of a falling tree in Gadson County, Florida, and a child reported to have been killed when a tree crashed through a mobile home. So many families have lost everything.

Over 900,000 homes and businesses in Florida, Alabama, Georgia and the Carolinas were without power.

Search and rescue teams combed through shattered U.S. communities on Thursday looking for victims of Hurricane Michael, a Category 4 monster storm which carved out a swathe of destruction in the Florida Panhandle, killing at least six in three states.

As of 2 p.m. EST, the tropical storm was 25 miles south of Greensboro, North Carolina.

"Drove from Panama City nearly to Mexico Beach and I can tell you this is the worst damage from wind that I have ever seen!"

"I know you just want to go home". Others were missing roofs or walls.

But the full extent of the damage was not yet clear, with some of the hardest-hit areas difficult to reach.

Michael, which decreased to a tropical storm overnight, is continuing to weaken as it moves along the southeast US coast. No patients were hurt, the hospital said.

Many residents with destroyed or damaged homes counted themselves lucky to have survived.

Apalachicola Mayor Van Johnson said: "There are so many downed power lines and trees that it's nearly impossible to get through the city".

One of the carport's legs punctured the roof and hit her in the head. Homes were split open by fallen trees. "We thought the windows were going to break at any time", Beu said.

Hundreds of cars had broken windows and twisted street signs lay on the ground. Pine trees were stripped and snapped off about 6 meters high. But it moved fast and intensified quickly, and emergency authorities lamented that many people ignored the warnings.

With a low barometric pressure recorded at 919 millibars, a measure of a hurricane's force, Michael was the third strongest storm on record to hit the continental United States, behind only Hurricane Camille on the Mississippi Gulf Coast in 1969 and the unnamed Labor Day hurricane of 1935 in the Florida Keys.
