Ousted Guardians of the Galaxy director switches camps, tied to new DC Comics film

James Gunn

His job: to write, and possibly direct, the sequel to Suicide Squad, one of the worst big-budget films in recent memory. First, Disney fired the director of Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy films after conservative trolls dug up some offensive tweets he had written years ago.

This is a complete waste of Gunn's talents. According to Deadline, he'll bring "a completely new take on the property to Suicide Squad" which, despite Margot Robbie's flawless performance as Harley Quinn, is probably for the best. It seems he is among those who have been sidelined as part of Warner Bros.' reshufflings of the DC movie universe, but if that is the case, he is still on board for Gunn's take. When Warner Bros. greenlit Birds of Prey, the Cathy Yan-directed feature centered around Harley Quinn's girl gang, before giving Suicide Squad 2 the go-ahead, O'Connor reportedly "grew frustrated and fell off the project" to work on The Has-Been instead.

Though it doesn't yet have a release date, fans will be intrigued to see where Gunn can take the franchise following a mixed critical reception for the first installment. Gunn is expected to take an entirely new approach, and potentially direct the new Suicide Squad instalment.

At Disney, Gunn helmed both Guardians of the Galaxy movies.

Ayer's return to the franchise was never on the table following the director's creative differences with the studio during the film's post-production process. Nothing but originality from this guy.

The film adaptation of Suicide Squad was already a bit of a Guardians of the Galaxy knock-off: you have a ragtag team full of scoundrels, banding together as unlikely friends to defeat a more powerful evil, all while classic songs play in the background. The Drax the Destroyer actor tweeted shortly after Deadline covered the news, "Where do I sign up!"
