Oscar, which became a tropical storm Saturday, is strengthening and expected to become a hurricane later Sunday but land isn't threatened, according to the National Hurricane Center.
At 1100 a.m. AST (1500 UTC), the center of Subtropical Storm Oscar was located near latitude 27.3 north, longitude 48.4 west. The latest advisory from the National Hurricane Center forecasts Oscar to be a strong tropical storm by the end of the weekend and a hurricane early in the coming week.
The Atlantic hurricane season ends on November 30 and usually peaks in mid-September. A turn toward the west-southwest is anticipated later today, followed by a turn back toward the west on Sunday.
It had 75 mph maximum sustained winds that extended outward only 15 miles. Oscar could then become a hurricane by Monday night or Tuesday. It is expected to turn towards the northwest on Monday and may rush across the north-central Atlantic by the middle of the week.
