Officials warn residents to keep an eye on Tropical Storm Michael

Storm Michael could soon form, hit U.S. midweek

Besides Michael, Tropical Storm Leslie - far away from land - is expected to strengthen over the next few days.

In the Caribbean, a hurricane warning is in effect for the Cuban province of Pinar del Rio - where most of Cuba's famed cigar tobacco is grown - and a tropical storm warning has been issued for the Isle of Youth.

Since the storm will spend two to three days over the Gulf, which has very warm water temperatures and favorable atmospheric conditions, "there is a real possibility that Michael will strengthen to a major hurricane before landfall", Robbie Berg, a hurricane specialist at the Miami-based storm forecasting hub, wrote in an advisory. Its movement speed was only 8 km/h.

"The current forecast indicates the storm entering the Gulf of Mexico by Monday morning, strengthening to a hurricane by early Wednesday and likely targeting the Florida panhandle by late Wednesday", CNN meteorologist Gene Norman said.

Most of the impacts from the storm are expected to be east of the Mississippi Coast, the National Weather Service in New Orleans says.

Scott also announced that he was activating 500 members of the Florida National Guard to assist with planning, logistics and storm response.

Democratic gubernatorial nominee Andrew Gillum canceled campaign events in South Florida on Monday and Tuesday to prepare for the storm, his campaign said. It is forecast to move north toward the Gulf Coast of Alabama or Florida Panhandle by midweek as a Category 1 or 2 hurricane.

After a hot weekend all eyes turn to the Gulf to watch the progression of Michael that is set to bring us an influx in tropical moisture by the middle of this week. The center of the storm is forecast to make landfall somewhere between Pensacola and the St. Marks National Wildlife Refuge.

"Our state understands how serious tropical weather is and how devastating any hurricane or tropical storm can be", Scott said. Winds are up to 70 miles per hour and is moving to the north at 7 miles per hour. "As we continue to monitor this storm's northward path toward Florida, it is critically important that our communities have every available resource to keep everyone safe and prepared". The storm has increased from winds of 35 miles per hour on Sunday to 75 miles per hour by late Monday morning.

Hurricane Michael has officially formed off the coast of Mexico. On Sunday, CEMA urged residents to maintain awareness of the storm. Tropical storm winds extended out 170 miles (275 kilometers), primarily to the northeast and southeast of the storm's center. It will weaken into a tropical storm near the Carolinas and Virginia on its way back to the Atlantic Ocean, forecasters said.
