October’s full moon 2018: When is full moon rise time today?

Hunter’s Moon Uranus & Orionid meteor shower make for spectacular views

Photos from the EarthSky Community of the glorious full Hunter's Moon in the October night sky.

October's full moon, this year on Wednesday, October 24, is commonly known as the Hunter's Moon, according to the Old Farmer's Almanac. It is also known as blood moon due to the orange-red tinge of the moon.

Images from around the world show the Moon glowing eerily in the October night sky, whilst footage from Novotel London Canary Wharf shows a stunning timelapse of the Full Moon. During October, deer were tracked and killed by hunters by autumn moonlight, in order to store food for the coming winter.

For those wanting to witness Uranus in all its glory, this is the ideal time; by cosmic coincidence, it is at the ideal viewing location over the course of the next few days, with the Hunter's Moon lighting the way (though good binoculars will be needed to pick it out from the lunar glare).

Phases of the moon are caused by the changing angle of the sun as the moon orbits the Earth. This is why the October's full moon has been named the Hunter's Moon.

Because of the tilt and shape of its orbit, we see the moon from slightly different angles over the course of a month, even though its "face" remains constant. The Moon resides in the northern part of the constellation Cetus. Other Native American tribes, who tied the full Moon names to the season's activities, called the full Moon the "Travel Moon" and the "Dying Grass Moon".

Waxing gibbous: More than half the face of the moon is illuminated. This is a stack of two images, one exposed for the foreground and the other for the moon.
