North Korean leader Kim Jong Un expected to visit Russian Federation soon

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said he and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un discussed denuclearisation steps to be taken by the North

North Korea has called on the United States to actively engage in talks on declaring an end to the Korean War, which was halted in 1953 with an armistice, not a peace treaty.

Mr Pompeo told reporters in Pyongyang the two "had a great, great visit" and that Mr Trump sent his regards.

Pompeo met Wang and Yang Jiechi, a senior Cabinet official and former foreign minister, after talks Sunday with Kim in North Korea's capital, Pyongyang.

The US has said that it will not make such concessions unless the North takes substantive steps to do away with nuclear weapons.

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un is expected to visit Russian Federation soon, South Korean President Moon Jae-in said on Monday (Oct 8).

"Chairman Kim said he's ready to allow them to come in", Pompeo said, adding that inspectors will be allowed in as soon as the USA and North Korea agree on "logistics".

Pompeo and Kim "refined options for the location and date" of their next summit, and they agreed to instruct their respective working-level teams to meet soon to intensify discussions on the key remaining issues, State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert said in a statement.

All six of the country's nuclear tests since 2006 were conducted at the site - the most recent in September 2017.

That breakthrough coming from U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, who held talks with Kim Jong Un over the weekend. "But we will get there", Pompeo said.

In a summit in April, the leaders of South and North Korea agreed to cooperate in declaring an end to the war this year, saying that they will seek multilateral talks involving the U.S. and possibly China. "Some of that is actually not even going to be about the threshold question of whether we can do this, it is more of the modalities of how to do this".

Kim and Mr Pompeo agreed to arrange another summit between the Korean leader and US President Donald Trump "as soon as possible".

Kim "expressed his gratitude to President Trump for making honest effort" to implement the Singapore agreement, according a report on the Pompeo visit by North Korea's state news agency KCNA.

The North has accused Washington of making "unilateral and gangster-like" demands on denuclearization and has insisted that sanctions should be lifted before any progress in nuclear talks. Trump said it resulted in a "special bond" between the two leaders and he was optimistic about a denuclearized future.

"Kim Jong Un appreciated the positively developing situation on the Korean peninsula".

A stalemate followed with the two countries struggling to agree over the exact terms of the vaguely worded deal secured in Singapore, with the U.S. calling for a "final, fully verified denuclearisation" of North Korea, while Pyongyang says more trust is needed.

He wouldn't be specific but said he and Kim had agreed to soon begin working-level talks on the nuts and bolts of denuclearization and on the placement of global inspectors at one of North Korea's main nuclear facilities, and had come close to finalizing a date and venue for the next Kim-Trump summit.
