NJ Surfer Dies From Rare, "Brain-Eating Amoeba"

The BSR Surf Resort voluntarily closed down its wave pool after a surfer infected with Naegleria fowleri died since visiting the park. CDC is working to determine the source of the amoeba

The agency is testing for Naegleria (nee-GLEHR'-yah) fowleri (FOW'-lur-eye), colloquially known as a "brain-eating amoeba".

Stabile had used the park's wave pool while on vacation, according to the Waco Tribune-Herald.

Stabile reportedly had days of severe headaches until he eventually couldn't move or speak properly. He went on to develop symptoms, including brain swelling and fever, and was pronounced brain dead on September 21.

The Waco Tribune-Herald reports Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is testing at BSR Cable Park's Surf Resort, which voluntarily closed on Friday.

Stabile was remembered as an avid outdoors lover who loved to surf and snowboard.

Doctors first thought he was suffering from meningitis, but tests revealed he had Naegleria fowleri the day before his death, when it was too late to treat the infection.

It usually infects people when contaminated water enters the body through the nose.

Naegleria fowleri infections are rare.

"Our hearts and prayers are with his family, friends, and the New Jersey surf community during this hard time", Parsons said.

The amoeba is typically found in fresh water, especially warmer water such as lakes, rivers and hot springs. Multiple test results for other bacteria and viruses had been negative or inconclusive. He said the surf resort is in compliance with the CDC's "guidelines and recommendations concerning Naegleria fowleri".

In the wake of Stabile's death his family founded the Fabrizio Stabile Foundation for Naegleria Fowleri Awareness - which has raised more than $22,000 in less than a week via a GoFundMe page.

It's a type of amoeba that can be fatal if it enters a person's brain.
