Nintendo patent imagines turning your phone into a GameBoy

Nintendo Has Patented a Functional GameBoy Case For Smartphones

Hopefully, these will be offered free with the case, but it wouldn't be wholly surprising if Nintendo tried to charge £9.99 per game or only supported Kirby's Dream Land.

This is an application, not a granted patent, and there's no guarantee that it will translate to a finished product.

There's even a little cut out for the front-facing camera, which gives us hopes that maybe Nintendo will be offering support for the Game Boy camera, 16 years after Nintendo ceased production of the official product.

We don't know which devices Nintendo may be developing its Game Boy case for, but we do know that Link's Awakening is a classic worthy of being continually rediscovered by new generations of smart phone-toting fans.

I'd be surprised to see this case launch and it may just be Nintendo using a patent to block someone else attempting the same thing.

The patent suggests that the phone itself will reside within the case and will remain completely usable outside the case's gaming functions. "If this case is used for the Switch, we imagine that it would provide a pretty nifty way to utilize the Handheld mode touchscreen functionality".

The description also confirms that the top and bottom of the phone won't be obstructed, meaning you'll be able to plug in a headphone or charger during play.

As the publication outlines, one of the key features of the case is the ability for its physical buttons to be sensed by a phone's touchscreen.

This news should come of course with the usual caveat, that just because a company patents an idea doesn't mean it will ever come to fruition or make it out into the real world.
