Monaco: Thierry Henry on manager shortlist to replace Leonardo Jardim

Monaco sack Leonardo Jardim Thierry Henry frontrunner as replacement

Jardim took over at Monaco in 2014 and guided them to their first league title in 17 years in 2016/17, during which Kylian Mbappe was the breakout star for the side.

ESPN reports that the club, where Henry won the Ligue 1 title in the 1996-97 campaign, have made a decision to sack Leonardo Jardim.

The club from the principality would not comment on a replacement, but their former player Thierry Henry has been linked to the job.

The French club are expected to sack their Portuguese boss, 44, with the team third from bottom in Ligue 1 with six points from nine games.

The home loss to Rennes last weekend was the final straw after a ten-game winless and four-game losing streak at the start of this season that signaled the end of Jardim's tenure.

In a club statement, Jardim said: "I'm grateful and proud to have been Monaco coach for more than four years".

According to ESPN, Henry will return to the club he began his professional career at, and with whom he lifted the Ligue 1 title in the 1996/97 campaign. If he leaves the Belgium team we will be sad, but I think for him maybe it's a good time to go.

Martinez has backed Henry to succeed at Monaco, and said: "Thierry is ready to take a club".

Monaco chief executive Vadim Vasilyev added: "I want to thank Leonardo with deepest respect for all the work he has done".

"His time here will remain one of the most lovely periods in the club's history".

Henry has been heavily linked with the post in recent days, reportedly turning down Aston Villa in favour of taking over at the Stade Louis II.

Monaco have picked up only one win in eleven matches this season in the league and Champions League this season, leading to the sacking of Leonardo Jardim.
