Over the last decade, nearly five times as many students have disclosed a mental health condition to their university compared with 10 years ago.

Professor Helen Herrman, president of the World Psychiatric Association, said: "We've seen a rise in mental illness in young people when, with all the knowledge we have, we should be seeing a decrease".

However, it is incredibly important that children and adolescents do receive the professional help and support when they need it, rather than waiting months or even years for treatment.

"A healthy mind can only be maintained if persons are aware of the importance of their mental status, and do their best to maintain it just as they would their physical health", Mrs. Brandy-Williams said. For 2018 there will be a particular focus on young people and their mental wellness in a changing world.

"Finding out how many people get the illnesses was surprising, knowing how common it actually is".
