Kavanaugh to hear his 1st oral arguments as Supreme Court justice

Lindsey Graham is “pissed” and coming after Democrats

Kavanaugh denied the allegations and in a blistering partisan attack during a Senate hearing on September 27, accused Democrats of an "orchestrated political hit". But Kavanaugh's confirmation was delayed as the Senate considered allegations that he had sexually assaulted a woman in high school.

The Republican president condemned Democratic calls to impeach the judge as an "insult to the American public". He told an audience that included the entire Supreme Court and a Who's Who of Republican movers and shakers that he had "no bitterness" and would never bring politics into the top court.

"On behalf of our nation, I want to apologize to Brett and the entire Kavanaugh family for the bad pain and suffering you have been forced to endure", Trump said.

Trump noted that Kavanaugh's wife, Ashley, was in the East Room audience at the White House, along with his two daughters Liza and Margaret. "You, sir, under historic scrutiny, were proven innocent".

In a swearing-in ceremony at the White House, following a torrid confirmation process that divided America, the United States president slammed Democrat opponents for having waged a "campaign of personal destruction" against Justice Kavanaugh.

On Saturday, Nancy Pelosi announced she will file a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request to make public a confidential FBI investigation into the claims against Justice Kavanaugh. As Hasen also suggests, that majority could be more likely to strike down nonpartisan map-drawing commissions, a tool for countering gerrymandering of congressional districts that Kennedy had voted to uphold (and which Kavanaugh might not).

Kavanaugh said at the swearing-in ceremony on Monday that "the Senate confirmation process was contentious and emotional".

Kavanaugh also announced that all four of his law clerks will be women - "a first in the history of the Supreme Court".

"I think a lot of Democrats are going to vote Republican", he said.

"What happened to the Kavanaugh family violates every notion of fairness, decency and due process", the president said in his remarks at the swearing in.

Senator Chris Coons of DE called impeachment talk "premature", while House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi said it "would not be my plan" to impeach the justice. He took his oaths of office in a private ceremony at the Supreme Court on Saturday evening. On Wednesday, the only other day of arguments this week, the court will hear another two hours of arguments. The president's rendering of a verdict on the sexual assault allegations risks further antagonising political opponents at a moment that the "Me Too" movement demands accountability for sexual misconduct.

A petition to impeach Justice Kavanaugh has more than 150,000 signatures.

The Supreme Court is declining to review an environmental ruling written by Brett Kavanaugh in his former role as an appeals court judge.
